Traveling along with many Deerfield teams to Concord this past weekend, varsity volleyball scored a big victory over St. Paul’s with a 3-0 win.
The first set was filled with back-and-forth runs as Deerfield got out to an 8-3 lead only to have St. Paul’s come back and take a 10-16 advantage. Strong serving with multiple aces from Camilla Navarro ‘20 and Daphne Gavros ‘22 allowed Deerfield to return to the lead at 22-17. A key moment was when Deerfield was able to grind out an epic 43-touch rally with the score knotted at 22-22 that propelled us to a 25-23 first set victory.
In the second set it was more strong serving, this time from Zoe Gavros ‘23, that allowed Deerfield to score repeated points. Lara Akande ‘20 was dialed-in and made multiple blocks at the net that stymied their middle hitters while Aoife Bruce ‘22 was able to capitalize on quick sets from Rosa Sun’21. Tied at 17-17, Zoe Gavros stepped to the line and served the team to 24-17 on the way to a 25-18 second set.
The third set had more of the same scrappy play from both teams. Georgia Sackrey ‘23 and Keri Clougherty ‘21 were able to effectively handle the right-side of the court and Deerfield emerged with a 25-19 victory.
The teams will face each other again for a rematch in the first week of November.
Deerfield returns to the court for another away match on Wednesday at 2:30 pm against NMH.
