The Williston Wildcats hosted the Deerfield Big Green for a midweek contest in Easthampton, MA. With spells of cold rain and occasional winds, the conditions of the turf field made for a fast-paced matchup between the sides. Upon quickly asserting their position in the midfield, however, the Big Green nearly opened up the score sheet in the early minutes of the match when Katie Gilbert blasted a shot that sailed inches over the right side of the crossbar. With numbers pushing forward, Deerfield looked comfortable possessing the ball, which gave way to them effectively attacking down both flanks of the Wildcat’s defense. Although Williston accurately found Deerfield’s goal, the Wildcats only managed three shots during the first half, causing Deerfield goalkeeper, Angie Czeremcha, little trouble. The Big Green’s best chance came midway through the first half when junior midfielder, Ingrid Matteini, hit a long range shot, but the Williston goal-keeper parried it away.
Without any goals in the first 40 minutes of play, DA was back on the attack early in the second half when. With just eight minutes in, Annabel Gerber whipped a 30-yard screamer that the Wildcat goalkeeper scrambled to save. Although the Big Green continued to possess the ball well, particularly in the midfield, their next best chance of scoring came when, Ingrid attempted to slot the ball toward the bottom corner of the net, but was pushed away by Wiliston’s goalkeeper.
The Big Green return to action this Saturday, when they travel north to take on the Big Red of St. Paul’s.
