Deerfield Hockey made the long trek to New Hampton Friday evening, arriving after the scheduled game time. Thankfully, our hosts were accommodating, and after getting our gear on we took the ice to face off against a fast and talented team. The first period was a back and forth affair with good pace and few whistles, but neither team found the back of the net. For whatever reason, we left our hockey brains and legs in the locker room at the start of the second period, and New Hampton scored four goals in less than four minutes. Stunned, but not out of it, we began to battle back, and dominated the rest of the period. Still, we headed to the third down 4-0, and definitely had our work cut out for us. Showing a ton of heart and determination, Deerfield scored three goals in the opening six minutes of the period. First, a power play blast from Mary Edmonds ‘19 (assist to Deirdre Mullowney ‘19), and then Haley Sundstrom ‘21 scored off of a great feed from Brianna Felice ‘21. Mullowney got a power play goal of her own (assist to Edmonds), but that’s as close as we were able to get. New Hampton scored one more in the final minutes, sending us home with a disappointing 5-3 loss after out-shooting New Hampton 30-21. Sara Ito-Bagshaw ‘22 earned the hard hat for all-around solid defensive play, and for shutting down New Hampton’s top forwards time and time again. Erin DeMarco ‘19 also had an excellent game on defense. Many thanks to the Mullowneys for the pizza, drinks and cookies after the game!
