As was shared in the locker room after the game, good teams find a way to win ugly games, and that’s exactly what happened as Deerfield faced off against Hill on Saturday night. After a tepid first period, in which Hill opened the scoring, we began to find our legs and compete for pucks all over the ice. Our first goal was classic Deerfield hockey: Haley Sundstrom ‘21, Brianna Felice ‘21 and Kelly Howe ‘22 won battles down low, got the puck to the net, and then jammed the rebound home. Sundstrom ended up with the goal, and Felice and Howe had the assists. Ellia Chiang ‘21 scored the eventual game winner toward the end of the second period, pouncing on a loose puck at the defensive blue line and driving in alone. It was a back and forth affair in the third period, but we couldn’t extend our lead despite several pucks that seemed to sit right on the goal line. Luckily, Jordan Manning ‘19 was up to the task in our net, denying several strong scoring attempts with some of her 21 total saves. Ali Fujiyoshi ‘19 was excellent on defense all night long, and Chiang earned the hard hat for her timely goal and strong performance on the penalty kill. Next up is a rare Sunday game against Lawrenceville at 1pm. Many thanks to the Coelho family for the wraps, chips, fruit, cookies and drinks after the game.
