Deerfield headed out to Ashburnham, MA to face the Penguins of Cushing Academy. Donning pink laces provided by Cushing for their annual Pink the Rink event, the Big Green wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard. DA scored three times in the first five minutes of the game, and led 4-2 at the end of the first period. DA and CA traded goals during the second period until the Green reeled off four straight goals to provide a nice cushion heading into the third period. Two late goals, including one as time expired, concluded the scoring in an 11-5 victory. The Roche Family enjoyed a big statistical game, with Hannah scoring a hat trick and Maggie earning two goals and two assists. Juliet Perry (2 G, 2A) rifled home the shot of the game——a sweet top shelf wrister that would have beaten Tuukka Rask. Hunter Keller and Gabriella Hu adeptly handled numerous frenetic scoring chances in front of the net to keep the Penguins’ offense from generating any sustained momentum. The final score might suggest that the game was one-sided——which it was not. Cushing proved to be a challenging opponent, and it took three periods of strong play from everyone to secure the win. Next up for JV Puck: at NMH next Wednesday.
