The 2018 JV volleyball season opened with a resounding 3-0 win over Worcester Academy on their home court at the Daniels Gymnasium in Worcester, MA. All eleven girls who traveled with the team had an opportunity to get into the action. In the first set, a core of six returning players from 2017 led the charge in a 25-11 win. Emma Weech ‘21 and Juliette Lowe ‘21 accounted for 9 service points with their swift and deadly serves. Although still early in the season, the team demonstrated a strong ability to make plays, led by the setting of Steph Martinez ’20 and Caleigh Manguilli ’20. The starting lineups were shuffled for sets 2 and 3, letting all players see action. Worcester came out strong in the second set, taking a quick 11-4 lead with strong serves. However, the Deerfield girls rallied, and they tied the score at 16-16 and then again at 19-19. Not caving under pressure, the Big Green took 6 of the last 7 points to win 25-20. The final set was a back and forth affair with both teams exchanging points rapidly. Freshman Jean Chun ‘22 ran off 5 straight service points behind a strong offensive surge to finally put Deerfield in the lead. Worcester did not back down and stayed within one or two points, but returning sophomore Abby Persons ’21 hammered some powerful hits to keep the squad ahead until the score was 21-20. The final four points went Green and the JV girls prevailed 25-20 once again. The team looks forward to building on its opening week success and hosting Loomis Chaffee next Wednesday.
