The girls varsity soccer team battled Pomfret in their home opener this Saturday on a beautiful fall afternoon. The Big Green and the Griffins were evenly matched in the first half, both with scoring opportunities off of counter attacks and moving the ball through the midfield. Defensively, Deerfield’s back line was strong, with a few courageous saves from our keeper, Val Hetherington ‘19. The attack kept pressing with energy, but couldn’t put one in the net. Halftime saw a 0-0 score. Early in the second half, the Griffins scored off of a cross from the wing that popped back out to the top of the 18-yard box. DA kept fighting, but was put slightly on their heels for the rest of the half. Pomfret slotted a ball through the back line with about ten minutes left before the final whistle to make the score 2-0.
The Big Green will continue their home stretch with Williston on Wednesday at 3:00pm.
