Deerfield Academy Junior A Soccer shut out a young but skilled Loomis Chaffee squad on Wednesday afternoon. Elliott Flagg ’20 led the way with a strong throw-in from the midfield up the line to Jared Faux ’20, who delivered a picture-perfect cross to the center of the box. Gale Gai ’22 buried the ball in the net to give DA a quick 1 – 0 lead. Deerfield continued to sustain the pressure throughout the first half and the rest of the game, maintaining possession for the majority of the match. Tomás Cushman ’22 demonstrated both speed and control in weaving his way through defenders, ultimately delivering a short pass to striker Sam Lauer ’20, putting Deerfield up 2 – 0. In the backfield, defenders Alex Strait ’20, Ben King ’21, and Ethan Chen ’20 laid down a wall, sweeping up any threatening action from Loomis. LC’s offensive players broke through for two excellent shots in the first half, but both were deflected by keeper Crawford Rice ’21 over the net. A quick chip from Nate Zucker ’22 to middie Connor Olson ’22 ended with to a bullet from Cushman to make it 3 – 0 at halftime. DA continued to play well in the second half, as defender Nasir Barnes ’21 threaded a few LC defenders to Olson, who again made a dynamite cross, this time to Will Schoelkopf ’22. Schoelkopf sent a rocket into the top right corner of the net to make it 4 – 0, Deerfield. Later, Flagg found Gale in the box, who shepherded the ball into the net for his second goal of the game, and Deerfield came away with a well-earned 5-0 win.
