The final week of the 2018 regular season got off to a strong start on Monday afternoon. The varsity ladies took down visiting NMH with a convincing 9-0 victory. The most competitive tennis of the day came at first and second doubles. We saw back and forth points with all four players closing to the net– looking for a winner on nearly every point. While NMH kept pace throughout the match at first doubles, Tori and Ashley finished the job, winning 8-6. Second doubles pair, Sophia and Emma, had their hands full with an NMH doubles pair that wouldn’t back down. The visiting team battled back from being down a break more than once to send this to a tie breaker. Sophia and Emma deserve credit for closing the match out with patience and poise. Alya Abd Aziz and Catalina won their first outing together as a third doubles team. Catalina’s ground strokes paired with aggressive net play from Alya proved to be a winning formula. At singles, Deerfield rolled, winning at every position. Lisa Chen posted her first singles win of the season at sixth singles. It should be noted that Lisa was down 2-5 in the first set, but fought on to win five straight games. She carried that momentum into the second set, winning 6-3 and securing the sweep for Deerfield. The team improves to 6-3 with this victory. The team will be back in action on Wednesday at Longmeadow.
