Deerfield got its first victory of the season over an overmatched Suffield crew on Wednesday. Whitney Vogt at #2 singles, Sasha Hinckley at #3 singles, and Julia Bewkes at #4 singles all had great wins — highlights included Vogt’s 6-1 victory in the second set and Hinckley’s bagel in her second set. In doubles, #1 pair Annabel Gerber and Julia Ferrante had a nice pair of 6-1, 6-3 victories. Acy Cai and Anne Brown, in #2 doubles, got a 6-4 victory in the first set and then a quick bagel in the second for the win. Cameron Heard and Liz Tarasi had perhaps the shortest contest of the day, winning the first set 6-1 and getting yet another bagel in the second set. In exhibition doubles, Anne Fiorini and Ally Kell had a nice 8-4 victory. The tough loss of the day was for Kendal Duff at #1 singles, who dropped the first set 3-6 but won the second 6-4 to force a tiebreak. Duff and her opponent went all the way to 11-9 before Duff finally fell, despite the pain of an injury. The whole team can be proud of its first victory and looks forward to a week of hopefully more frequent practices as the weather begins to clear.
