The boys JV hockey team traveled to Northfield today on an unseasonably warm day for late February. With the temperatures in the mid-sixties the outdoor rink was in surprisingly good shape! It was the first time in many years the Deerfield team experienced such warm temperatures in this rink! A great day for a hockey game.
The visitors would score the game’s first two goals in the first period. Peter Marchese opened the scoring midway through the period when he picked up a pass from Will Savage at center ice. Marchese would skate the puck in over the blue line and rifle a shot past the NMH goalie. Minutes later Henry Gustavson would fire a hard shot from the blue line that would find its way to the back of the net. He received a nice pass from Alton Machen. The score at the end of 1 period was a 2-0 lead for Deerfield.
Garrett Moe opened the second period scoring getting a nice set up pass from line mate Jake Presnal. NMH would score the next goal midway through the second period. Deerfield goalie Andrew Peck would have a solid day for the Doors allowing only two goals off 20+ shots on the afternoon. Deerfield would regain control of the game scoring the next two goals to take a commanding 5-1 lead after two periods. Austin Philie would score his third goal in the last two games off a pass from Gabe Moos. Minutes later Alton would score a short-handed goal off a beautiful pass from Henry Gustavson.
NMH would get the score to 5-2 early in the third period converting on a power play. Then Deerfield’s Andy Han and Will Dale would score the final two goals of the contest.
NMH played hard for the entire game, but Deerfield had too much firepower and we were able to capitalize on a good number of scoring chances.
Next up is a return contest with Eaglebrook Wednesday at 3:30pm. The team will finish their season with a road trip to Simsbury, Connecticut to take on Westminster at 4:30pm.
