On February 14, Deerfield Academy secured a road win against a defensive-minded squad from Wilbraham and Monson Academy, 29-18. This contest witnessed a sustained and focused defensive effort by the Green as they limited Wilbraham and Monson to five points in the second half. For the second consecutive game, Deerfield demonstrated balanced scoring with Vera Grace Menafee ’20 leading all scorers with ten points. At the small forward position, Lexi Baker ’19 contributed six points to go along with a handful of assists. Post player Whitney Vogt ’20 continues to show deep range, and Ruby Chase ’21 continues to play strong defense as well as splashing shots from beyond the three-point arc. Samara Cummings ’20, Annie Kane ’20, and Captain Nicole Da Costa ’19 each contributed to the scoring column for the Green.
The tone of the game, however, was established early on when Captain Jada Howard ’19 proved to be a disruptive force in the backcourt. She collected eight steals this game while helping her team score in transition. Along with her steals and assists, Captain Howard found her way, as well, into the scoring column, capitalizing on one of the notable fast break opportunities.
The Green (8-4) will hit the gym tomorrow in preparation for a road contest against their local rivals to the north, Northfield Mount Hermon (9-0).
