Travelling to nearby NMH on Monday, Deerfield lost 3-1 to the Hoggers by scores of 25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 25-19.
In the first set, NMH came out strong and ready to play with their effective middle hits and good setting. Deerfield gave them too much of a lead to start so that even with a run to take it from down 15-9 to rallying to 24-23, the Big Green could not come back for the win.
In the second set, Deerfield again gave NMH an early lead and found themselves down 19-11. Digging deep to find their grit, Deerfield rode a huge service run from Camila Navarro ‘20 to tie the set at 19-19; strong serving from Rosa Sun ‘21 brought Deerfield to 21-24 and Deerfield was able to sideout to win the set.
The third set saw Deerfield get out to a strong start and it looked as if they would be able to carry their momentum to another victory, but NMH played tough and took a long service run to go from 17-20 to 23-20 and then win the set.
Needing to battle back in the fourth set, Deerfield was unable to string together points at the right times and eventually lost the set 25-19.
Deerfield next travels to St. Paul’s on Wednesday.
