On Saturday, November 3rd, the boys junior B soccer team traveled north to Saxton’s River to meet Vermont Academy. While the driving rain that had fallen for most of the day had ended by game time, it was still windy and cold up in the mountains. The first half was scoreless, but Deerfield still had numerous chances, including hitting the post in the 33rd minute and forcing the VA keeper to make several saves. VA finally broke through the Deerfield back line in the 47th minute to take a 1-0 lead and quickly added another goal 4 minutes later to make the lead 2-0. Deerfield fought back and seemed poised to score several goals, but just could not find the back of the net. A beautiful Yurock Song ’22 header off a corner kick went bar down, but didn’t cross the line and a Will Lodge ’22 breakaway was saved by the keeper. Lodge finally scored just before time to trim the lead to 1, but the final whistle blew just after kickoff. With the 2-1 loss, the team’s record drops to 4-5-2 and they’ll seek to even up the season record at .500 with the final match of the season, a 3 pm kickoff on the road at Cushing Academy on November 7th.
