On a cool, fall Saturday Deerfield took the field against a strong opponent in St. Paul’s. After some back-and-forth action, Deerfield was caught flat-footed anticipating an out-of-bounds whistle. St. Paul’s played through and put one in the back of the net to take an early 1-0 lead. Shortly after, St. Paul’s capitalized again off a corner kick, bringing their lead to 2-0, a lead that they held on to for the remainder of the half. Deerfield entered the second half ready to compete and played some great soccer, connecting passes all the way up the field and using this combination play to create scoring opportunities. Deerfield senior, Sophie Opler ’19, worked hard in the midfield for the Big Green, winning balls, initiating many counter attacks and finding her teammates, Ruby Chase ’21 and Leanna Dalessio ’19, making hard runs up top. DA put a lot of pressure on St. Paul’s, but was unable to convert on any of its attempts, and a deep shot from St. Paul’s found the back of the net in the last ten minutes of the game to make the final score 3-0. Deerfield looks to bounce back this upcoming Wednesday, as they take on NMH on the road.
