In a rare Friday night game, Deerfield hit the ice at Eaglebrook against the defending New England champions from New Hampton. We started off a little slowly, deferring to the visitors’ speed and skill, and giving up the neutral zone way too easily. We began to find our legs as the period progressed, but New Hampton scored first off of a beautiful tip in front. They extended their lead early in the second period on the power play, but then the game turned in a dogfight. The large crowd of students, faculty, family and friends were treated to a fast-paced and exciting final two periods, and Deerfield got stronger and stronger as the game went on. Christina Halloran ’20 pulled us within one toward the end of the second period on the power play, taking the puck hard to the net and snapping a shot by the New Hampton goalie. Mary Edmonds ’19 and Deirdre Mullowney ’19 earned the assists on the play. The third period was a fantastic all-around effort, as we put 14 shots on the New Hampton net and battled hard all over the ice. We played hard, smart, and together, and our efforts were rewarded when Edmonds tied the score with less than two minutes to go after good work down low by linemates Halloran and Ellia Chiang ’21. Unfortunately, New Hampton found the winner 30 seconds later, when a low-to-high snipe from the point went top corner. A disappointing result, but the Big Green played really well against a talented opponent. Liv Mikesell ’20 played very well in goal, and came up with several timely saves when it mattered most. We’ll hit the road again in the morning to take on a strong Taft squad. Thanks to the Edmonds family for the Panera sandwiches, chips, drinks and desserts after the game!
