Facing their Class A rivals from New Hampshire, the Big Green had its four-game win streak snapped against a sound Exeter squad, 35-19. The game was tied at 15 at the half, but the Exonians proved methodical in their approach to the game. In the first half, the Green played high caliber basketball, buoyed by Alexia Baker’s sharp shooting from the floor. Baker ’19 led all scorers in the game with 11 points. Jane Mallach ’20 continues to show range beyond the arc, opening the contest with a splash from three-point range. Whitney Vogt ’20, Samara Cummings ’20, and Kate Hickey ’20 all contributed points in the effort.
While this game was a Tale of Two Halves, the west court witnessed the foreshadowing of future events during the closing ticks of the first half when the Exonians scored two baskets to tie the game at the half. While Exeter played strong, disruptive defense during the second half, all was not lost. Deerfield played the game with class and grit until the final buzzer. The Green, as well, showed tremendous tenacity in rebounding.
Captains Nicole Da Costa ’19 and Jada Howard ’19 were instrumental in letting their team know the importance of facing adversity and continuing to move forward. “Losing is never easy,” Howard said post game. “We cannot dwell on this.” And Da Costa encouraged her team to use this game to move forward, with renewed focus, commitment, and energy, to the next contest.
The Green looks forward to taking the court this Wednesday when they are back in session against Williston for a 3 pm tip, West Gym.
