The Deerfield JV Girls’ basketball travelled east to the hills of Worcester and earned a 41-21 road victory during its Saturday afternoon contest. The game featured balanced scoring and reliable defense by the Green as Vera Grace Menafee ’20 led all Deerfield scorers. Along with Menafee, Samara Cummings ’20 continued her strong post play on both offense and defense. To complement Deerfield’s stalwart post play, Whitney Vogt ’20 was a force in the paint, scoring the ball, rebounding, and blocking shots. Michelle Zimmermann ’21 continues to emerge as a viable post player.
This game also marked the return of Jane Mallach ’20 to the backcourt. Mallach, along with point guard Ruby Chase ’21, each scored six points while creating scoring opportunities for their teammates.
This game, in all, featured consistent, up tempo basketball by the Green. Team speed and defense never wavered as the Green played with character, purpose, and commitment to one another. Captains Nicole Da Costa ’19 and Jada Howard ’19 provided strong leadership, and Alexia Baker ’19 was pivotal in scoring in transition and making stops on defense. As has become characteristic of the Green during the 2017-2018 campaign, Selena Martineau ’19, Annie Kane ’20, Kate Hickey ’20, Katie Alonso ‘19, and Sami Dulam ’21 all provided energy while making contributions on both offense and defense. Dulam ’21 gained a new career high in points.
With their strong guard play, the Hilltoppers proved to be a worthy opponent. On Wednesday, January 10, the Green will travel to The Taft School for a 3:45 pm tip.
