In a spirited Wednesday afternoon contest, The Big Green of Deerfield defeated Williston, 32-14. Deerfield was down by one at the break, as both teams were engaged in a struggle of tenacious defenses. The second half of this game marked a return to Deerfield’s core principles of ball touches, athleticism, and running the floor in transition. Deerfield’s 23-4 run in the second half was spurred by Selena Martineau ’19, whose eight steals ignited the Green’s scoring in transition. Ruby Chase ’21 and Katie Alonso ’19 led all Deerfield scorers. Chase ’21 netted her share of transition buckets while Alonso ’19 showed good form in splashing her mid-range jumper.
In all, this win featured balanced scoring and opportunistic defense, all hallmarks of this year’s team. Selena Martineau ’19, Whitney Vogt ’20, Samara Cummings ’20, Vera Grace Menafee ’20, Jane Mallach ’20, Kate Hickey ’20, and Michelle Zimmermann ’21 all contributed baskets, blocks, and boards in what proved to be a complete team effort. Captains Jada Howard ’19 and Nicole Da Costa ’19, along with Alexia Baker ’19, Annie Kane ’20, Juliet Lowe ’21, and Sami Dulam ’21 provided boards, assists, and steals that secured home victory for the Green.
The Green, by all measures, showed sustained focus and “finished up strong.” The squad is back to work today as they open the door in preparation for the Saturday afternoon tip on the road against Andover.
