In a contest of will, skill, and endurance, Deerfield JV Girls’ basketball team prevailed against the well-coached squad of The Taft School, 29-28. The game featured strong defense, opportunistic offense, and solid play on both sides. Tied at the half, Deerfield opened the second half of the game with a high-level of play marked by energy, tenacious defense, ball movement, and patient offense. Showcasing long- and mid-range dexterity with her jumper, Jane Mallach ’20 led all Deerfield scorers. Along with Mallach ’20, Captain Jada Howard ’19 and Ruby Chase ’21 formed a strong cohort in the back court that created scoring opportunities while providing ball security and forcing turnovers. In the front court, Whitney “Big Whit” Vogt ’20 was a force on offense and netted the game-winning bucket during the closing seconds of the game. The Rhinos made a run during the final fifteen seconds of the game, yet the Green proved worthy as they held the door.
Captain Nicole Da Costa ’19, Vera Grace Menafee ’20, Samara Cummings ’20, Annie Kane ’20, and Michelle Zimmermann ’21 all tallied baskets in this win, which proved to be a measure of Deerfield’s character and commitment to one another.
Deerfield JV Girls’ basketball will have another tough assignment this Saturday when the squad faces Exeter for a 4:30 tip at home.
