Boys Varsity Soccer Drops Season Opener at Avon
The boys varsity soccer team was eager to get their season going after a week of hard work in practices and scrimmages. The 2017 season opened with a road game at Avon Old Farms on a beautiful day with clear skies and an impeccable playing field.
While the boys were excited to get the regular season underway, a talented Avon midfield made it difficult for the visitors to find their rhythm. However, the Big Green managed to weather the early storm and created a number of quality scoring opportunities. In the 29th minute of play, Avon found the first goal of the game on a breakaway inside the eighteen-yard box. The home side would enter the half with a one-goal lead.
With a couple of half-time adjustments and some fresh legs with the introduction into the game of Nolan Zusi ’19, Tomas Zourikian ’19, Alonso Fernandez ‘21 and Jarod Harrington ’20, Deerfield took control of the first twenty minutes of the half. In that run of play, DA found their first goal of the season when goalkeeper Patrick Logan ’18 punted the ball about sixty yards upfield to fellow classmate Cabrel Happi ’18, who then niftily chipped the keeper — a world-class finish!
With the game tied at a goal apiece, the boys continued to push forward and had Avon on their heels, until a penalty awarded to Avon would shift the flow of the game. Avon’s most talented striker stepped forward and struck the ball well, but once again, Logan was there to save the day, making a brilliant diving save to the left side of the goal. Unfortunately, another Avon player would knock home the rebound. Avon found the back of the net two more times before the end of the game, making the final 4-1 in favor of Avon.
Austin Philie ’19, Jackson Pitcher ’19, Kevin Hendrick ’18, Matt Miron ’19 and Alex Platt ’18 all played a full ninety minutes, a testament to their fitness and hard work.
The boys varsity soccer team will be back in action on Saturday when they host Salisbury at 4:00 PM.
