Deerfield narrowly lost to Stoneleigh-Burnham’s varsity tennis team on Monday afternoon. Led by a strong group of singles players, Stoneleigh won the #1, #2, and #3 matches, though Maddie Chai ’17, Ally Edwards ’17, and Sasha Hinckley ’19 put up a good fight. Julia Bewkes ’18 nearly swept at #4 singles with an 8-1 win. On the doubles side, it was a great day for Deerfield’s 9th graders: rock-solid #1 doubles pair Tess Mannix and Whitney Vogt, shut out their opponents for the second time this season, and Acy Cai and Ally Kell got a decisive 8-5 victory, rounding out Deerfield’s wins for the day. Sophomores Abby Bracken and Lilia Brooker, playing #3 doubles, hung on for a long matchup, and at 7 games per side, gave the tiebreak game their best effort. Deerfield will travel to Northfield Mount Hermon on Wednesday and then host Loomis Chaffee at home on Saturday as the season begins to wind down.
