Deerfield lost to Taft 4-3 after a series of tight and competitive matches for their opening contest on Saturday. Maddie Chai quickly defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-2. Helena Tebeau won her first set 6-2 and narrowly lost her second, 7-5, then speedily finished out the tiebreaker 10-3 to give Deerfield another point. While Ally Edwards and Claire Zhang lost their singles matches, they both got a handful of games off tough Taft players, as did Sasha Hinckley and Soo Oh in their doubles match against a strong pair. Doubles team Tess Mannix and Whitney Vogt eked out a win in the first set 6-4, but then found their rhythm and won the second set 6-0, and the team of Acy Cai and Ally Kell lost but improved from 6-2 in their first set to 7-5 in their second. The team looks forward to another week of practice and a match against Suffield on Wednesday afternoon.
