The Deerfield Boys Lacrosse team opened up their season on Saturday in what is annually one of the most challenging contests of the season against the Brunswick School. The game lived up to its hype as it took overtime to decide the outcome between these two very talented programs. Both DA and Brunswick had brief leads throughout the first half of the game and the back and forth play only increased in the second half. Ryan Welch ’20 scored a big fast break goal that tied the game at 5 goals apiece with just over a minute to play. That momentum carried the team into overtime where DA had several great scoring opportunities that were thwarted by a stout Brunswick defense. Unfortunately for the Big Green, Brunswick was able to capitalize first in the overtime period with a goal that sealed the game for a 6-5 Brunswick win. The Big Green offensive attack was led by goals from Parker Luber ’18, Nolan Zusi ’19, Nicky Hay ’20, Zach Davis ’20 and Ryan Welch ’20. The DA defense swarmed and disrupted the opposition’s offense all afternoon and the strong effort was highlighted by Thanasi Tsandilas ’20 posting 8 saves in goal as well as Topjor Tsultrim ’18, Aiden Day ’17 and Graham O’Brien ’19. The team will go back to work in practice this week to get ready for the home opener on Wednesday April 5th at 3:30 PM against a tough Avon squad.
