The Deerfield Boys JV Lacrosse team found themselves in familiar territory on Wednesday afternoon with a home game against Old Avon Farms School Varsity “B” lacrosse team. This time the OT win went in favor of Deerfield Academy when Nicky Hay pumped in the winning goal at 2:45 in the overtime period for a 8-7 victory.
Avon jumped out to an early 2-0 lead within the first minute of play by winning consecutive face-offs and going in for the scores. The defense of Aiden Day, Graham O’Brien, Topjor Tsultrim and Pat McKee then clamped down and held Avon scoreless for the rest of the quarter. Deerfield’s offense got rolling with goals by Kevin Danforth and Nolan Zusi to tie the game at the end of the first quarter 2-2. In the second quarter Deerfield’s offense found their rhythm and added another 3 goals with Garrett Alexander, Parker Luber and Nolan Zusi all finding the net to take a 5-4 lead into halftime.
A hard fought third quarter saw Avon add 2 goals and long pole Carter Hampson for Deerfield tally his first goal of the season as the teams battled between the lines with the quarter ending at a 6-6 tie. Solid goal tending by Thanasi Tsandilas for DA helped keep the 4th quarter tight as Zach Davis buried a shot into the corner with less than a minute left to play in the game to tie the score at 7-7 at the end of regulation.
Deerfield won the ensuing face off and fired off 4 shots on the Avon cage before Nicky Hay put the game away with his winning goal. Deerfield JV is now 1-1 on the season.
