On Wednesday, April 5th the Deerfield Academy baseball team opened its regular season at home against Loomis Chaffee. The Big Green dropped a hard fought 5-3 decision. Senior Will Suter took the mound for Deerfield and pitched well into the 5th inning. Griffin McDowell ‘18 pitched 2 1/3 innings of effective relief. Deerfield took a 1-0 lead in the first when Owen MacPhee ‘18 reached on an error and Dylan Presnal ’17 drove him in with a double. Presnal was 2-4 on the day with 2 RBIs. MacPhee was 2-3 with a sacrifice bunt and an RBI. The Big Green, trailing 5-3 going into the bottom of the 7th threatened to tie the score when David Thomas ’20 stroked a pinch hit single. Donnie Sparks ran for Thomas and advanced to third on MacPhee’s single and a misplayed ball in the outfield. The tying runs were on second and third with one out. Unfortunately, the rally fell short. The Big Green opens conference play against Cushing on Saturday at 2:30. Dylan Presnal ’17 is the scheduled starter.
