Girls Varsity Hockey took the ice tonight against a strong Berkshire team, looking to bounce back following a subpar effort on Wednesday. Though the team had every reason to be distracted and discouraged by off ice events this week, they chose to rise above the adversity, revealing true strength, character, and team unity in the process. The Big Green got on the board first, as Jenna Greenbaum ’17 finished off nice work down low by her linemates Meghan Halloran ’17 and Mary Edmonds ’19. The visitors tied the score five minutes later on the power play, and so the two teams headed to the locker room knotted at one. Two quick goals in the second period turned the momentum in favor of Deerfield, as the team really dug in and began to battle for every puck. Mae Emerson ’19 scored our second goal of the night, banging in the rebound of her own tip off of a Meghan O’Brien ’18 shot, and then Ali Fujiyoshi ’19 blasted home a shot from the point off of assists from Greenbaum and Halloran. In the third period, the Big Green simplified their game, and played mostly smart hockey down the stretch to keep Berkshire from mounting a comeback. Halloran scored an empty night goal (assist to Greenbaum) to make the final score 4-1 in favor of DA. Jordan Manning ’19 was excellent in goal for Deerfield, making 35 saves on the night. This was a fun win in front of a big and raucous crowd, and the team is so appreciative of the parents and students who supported us tonight. This is a special group of athletes, and we look forward to continuing to progress as a group both on and off the ice. Many thanks to the Mikesells and Devereauxs for the pizza, sandwiches, drinks, fruit, and desserts after the game. Next up is Cushing on Wednesday.
