The girls’ JV team got their first win of the season in a decisive trouncing of Hotchkiss on Saturday. Though seniors and varsity players Lily Louis and Maya Hart fell to their opponents at #1 and #2, the team’s depth allowed them to pull out a 5-2 victory regardless. Senior captains Lilley Salmon and Carolina Conzelman led the way at #3 and #4, winning 3-0 (11-8, 11-9, 11-3) and 3-1 (11-9, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9). Both seniors played smart squash and bested their opponents on the basis of their technical skill. Returning sophomore Christina Li (#5) made short work of her Hotchkiss counterpart as well, winning 3-1 (11-9, 8-11, 11-7, 11-3) and putting Deerfield one game away from the victory. At #6, junior Cameron Heard had the toughest battle of the day, trading wins with her opponent. Deadlocked at 11-all, Cameron drilled down and played her best squash to pull out a 13-11 victory and give Deerfield a fourth win that day (3-2). #7 and newcomer to the sport Talbot von Stade ’20 had a great Deerfield squash debut, beating her opponent 3-1 (11-2, 6-11, 11-6, 11-7) thanks to her hustle and cool demeanor. In exhibition matches, Olivia Geraci ’19 (#8), Isabella Geraci ’19 (#9), Esme Benjamin ’20 (#10), captain Olivia Jones ’18 (#11), and Cameron Garner ’19 (#12) swept their opponents in quick 3-0 matches, giving Deerfield a total of 10 victories for the day.
