A spirited crowd of parents and Deerfield students made their way to Eaglebrook’s rink on Saturday to witness the boys varsity hockey team begin their season with a 3-1 win over visiting Groton. It was all Deerfield in the first period as the squad put immediate pressure on the Groton defense. Senior captains Theo Lenz ’18, Tommy Craft ’18, and Bret Pastor ’18 led the way from the blue line, consistently joining the rush and peppering Groton’s young goaltender. Junior Tomas Zourikian ‘19 opened the scoring with a nifty move around two defenders before going thin mints for the goal. The Big Green added to their lead in the second frame with a shorthanded goal by senior Cam Snow ’18, who took a Patrick Logan pass and went in on the Groton goalie all alone. Junior Mikey Holland ’18 capped the scoring for Deerfield, hammering home a pass from behind the net off the stick of junior Sasha Shogren ’19. After going up 3-0 midway through the second period, the boys took their foot off the gas and allowed a steady barrage of shots on junior goalie Thomas Gale ’19. Gale turned away all but one, finishing the night with 26 saves for the win.
Up next for Deerfield is an away game at NMH on Wednesday afternoon.
