The boys j.v. hockey team travelled to Westfield late Friday to have the annual early season scrimmage against the Westfield High School varsity. This was the first competitive play for the team after three early morning practices at Eaglebrook since returning from the Thanksgiving break. For the first period Westfield looked like a team that was playing in mid-season form as they raced out to a 2-0 lead. However, Big Green’s play got better as the game went on. Will Dale finally broke the scoreless streak when he found the back of the net midway through the second period off a nice pass from defenseman Henry Gustavson.
Deerfield kept the pressure on throughout the rest of the period and into a shortened third period due to ice time scheduling. Westfield would score again increasing their lead to 3-1 but it was a solid effort early in the season for this team. Andy Peck and Alex Leong shared the duty between the pipes. Both played well against a good Westfield offense. Up front the line of Austin Philip, Aiden Philip, and Jacob Presnal gave the most consistent effort creating several scoring chances with their hustle and gritty two-way play the entire game.
The team opens their season on Wednesday taking on Eaglebrook varsity at 3:30 @ Eaglebrook.
