The boys’ J.V. hockey team notched their first win of the season 6-0 over visiting Winchendon School. Starting in net for the home team was Alex Leong who recorded 10 saves enroute to his first career shutout as a goaltender.
The first period saw the play in both ends as both sides tried finding their rhythm. Toward the end of the period Nate Baker broke the scoreless deadlock with his first goal of the season.
The second period belonged to Deerfield as we would score three unanswered goals while applying pressure deep in the Winchendon end for the entire second period. Kevin Danforth, Francis Gannon, and Jake Presnal would all find the back of the net. All five lines were rolling and the goals came from three different lines extending the home team’s lead to 4-0
Deerfield would go on to score two more goals in the third period closing the scoring at 6-0 for the game. Alton Machen and Cam Snow were the goal scorers, but give credit all day to the entire group of forwards playing a relentless forechecking system against their opponents which created loads of good scoring opportunities.
On the defensive side, Deerfield got strong games from Jack Brown, Alex Strait, Nate Baker, Will Holland, Matt Gardner, Henry Gustafson and Alex Weinman. Their consistent play gave Winchendon very few good scoring opportunities. When those opportunities came Alex Leong shut down any threat with his good play between the pipes.
The team is off until they return to practice on Wednesday morning January 3 as they prepare for the next game that Saturday January 6th against Salisbury.
