In what proved to be an all-around team effort, the Deerfield JV Girls’ basketball team notched its first win of the early season against local rival Frontier Regional, 41-26. The contest witnessed a balanced scoring attack led by Alexia Baker ’19. A viable scoring option on the perimeter and in the paint, Baker was a force on the offensive glass as well. Captains Jada Howard ’19 and Nicole Da Costa ’19 provided excellent generalship through spacing the floor, dishing assists, and swishing key baskets. Along with Howard, Ruby Chase ’21 and Katie Alonso ’19 made accurate passes, forced turnovers, and converted on scoring opportunities. Molly Fischer ’20, Samara Cummings ’20, and Hanna Deringer ’20 all made noteworthy contributions to the offense while being disruptive on defense.
Efforts on defense were led by Whitney Vogt ’20, who blocked shots in the paint, rebounded well, and was offensive-minded. Vogt ’20, along with Selena Martineau ’19 and Cummings ’20, all played well in the post by grabbing boards and capitalizing on scoring opportunities. Sami Dulam ’21, Kate Hickey ’20, Annie Kane ’20, and Juliet Lowe ‘21 all continue to make notable contributions on the court both offensively and defensively. Dulam ’21, Lowe ’21, and Kane ’20 are tenacious defenders, and Hickey ’20 has been consistent on offense while using her quickness to force turnovers for transition baskets.
The story of this game, however, was excellent ball movement, which created a flow for the Deerfield offense to complement its sound defense. With its motion offense, Deerfield made the most of its scoring opportunities, both in transition as well as in the half court.
The Green brought spirit, energy, and physicality to the court as they put together a stellar team effort. “I like to see our girls give their best,” Head Coach Dr. Khaleh Thomas said. “And our girls played well.”
JV Girls’ travel across Old Main Street this Wednesday as they face The Bement School for a 5 pm tip, concluding the holiday season openers against local rivals.
