The JV Girls’ basketball team opened its 2017-2018 season with a 29-14 home scrimmage loss against local rivals Northfield Mount Hermon. The Green played stellar defense throughout the fast and physical contest. Nothing came easy on either side. Midway through the first half, Deerfield began to find its flow offensively as a result of its speed and disruptive defense, which created fast break opportunities. Ruby Chase ’21 led all Deerfield scorers. She was aggressive on defense and fearless in transition, capitalizing on key passes from Hanna Deringer ’20 and Katie Alonso ’19, to pace the Green. Deringer ’20 also played a vital role in forcing turnovers in the half court. Captains Jada Howard ’19 and Nicole Da Costa ’19 were instrumental in keeping energy at a high level and providing great court leadership. Efforts in the front court were led by Whitney Vogt ’20 who blocked four shots and gathered several rebounds, along with Alexia Baker ’19, Samara Cummings ’20, Selena Martineau ’19, and Molly Fischer ’20. Vogt, Cummings, and Martineau all managed tough assignments in the paint. Fischer’s scoring came to life in the second half as she found spots in the zone and began to make quick moves along the baseline for floaters in the paint. Guard play was equally as strong. Howard and Da Costa, along with Juliet Lowe ’21, Jane Mallach ’20, Sami Dulam ’21, Annie Kane ’20, and Kate Hickey ‘ 20 contested shots and disrupted passes, which led to scoring opportunities for the Green. Throughout the contest, Deerfield showed perseverance, and both teams demonstrated high-level sportsmanship and respect. Head Coach Dr. Khaleh Thomas said, “I was pleased with our defense. And our shots will come.”
Girls’ JV will take its home court again this Monday for a 5 pm tip-off against another local rival, Frontier Regional.
