On Wednesday, November 8th, the boys junior B soccer team hosted Cushing Academy on the lower fields for the last game of the year, as well as Coach Harcourt’s last game coaching for Deerfield. Despite the condition of the field in some spots, it was a perfect day for a game – sunny and cool. Deerfield dug themselves into a hole quickly, conceding goals in the 6th and 14th minutes to fall behind 2-0. Just one minute later, Rob Sawyers ’21 netted a goal from a free kick to cut the deficit in half and nearly tied it in the 19th minute with a beautiful shot that unfortunately hit the post. Cushing responded with two more goals, in the 23rd and 27th minutes, to lead 4-1 at the half. Deerfield started the second half quickly, with a Sam Laur ’20 goal in the 37th minute. Two minutes later, Nic Labadan ’18 converted the team’s first PK of the season to make the score 4-3. With over 30 minutes left in the game, optimism was high and Deerfield kept up the pressure in the offensive zone, looking for the equalizer. Despite some good chances, Deerfield was not able to score again, while Cushing added 2 late goals for the final 6-3 margin. The boys junior B team finished with a strong 8-2 record in Coach Harcourt’s final campaign after a long and distinguished coaching career.
