Field Hockey: Junior Varsity defeats Choate

Event Details

In their last contest as a group (and with EVERYONE HEALTHY!), the girls played their best game of the season against Choate, scoring 10 minutes into the first half, and then holding the lead (and mostly dominating play) for a very chilly rest of the game. Such a satisfying victory! As ever, the win came from everyone’s effort: the forward line passed expertly, and effortlessly changed up, with Mira Binzen ‘20 back in the lineup (yay!) holding the width on wing; Renée Ballou ’20 strong at the inner position and demonstrating excellent ball control; Lucy Blake ’19 in perfect position feeding into the circle or on post; Dom Whitney ’19 effectively pushing the attack with dexterous passing; Sydney Gregg ’20 controlling the middle, knocking on the door; and Jada Howard ’19 controlling the right and sending the ball in. Our two middies—Emma Jaskolski ’20 on the left, and captain Lynnette Jiang ’18 on the right—were spot-on rock solid, always in the best position either pushing the attack or supporting on transition and defense. Meanwhile, the backs held their own, with captain Anna Scott ’18 blocking up the middle or stealing the ball and sending it back up to our offense (sometimes changing fields); Ellie Shilling ’21 (shout-out to our only 9th grader!) collecting and smartly redirecting; captain Emmeline Flagg ’18 consistently providing a wall; Hunter Keller ’20 always in the right place to scoop up the ball, carry fast on the diagonal and feed to the attack; sweep Lily Faucett ’20 always there in clutch moments with a strong stick and great forward momentum; and, last line of defense, captain Niyafa Boucher ’18 with some excellent saves, great voice and direction, and a shut-out in her final game as a DA field hockey player. Special shout-out to captain Sabrina Sotirhos ’18, our indomitably spirited cheerleader—and scorekeeper and timer and go-to source of endless positivity and support: you were amazing, all season long. The girls have so much to be proud of—the win for sure, but maybe more important: the positive spirit and good cheer that fueled each practice and every game, without exception. We are so proud of you and all your hard work! Thanks for creating such a great season! All together, Deerfield! Go Big Green!
