This week we were excited to take the 30 minutes trip over to Northampton to face Williston. Varsity and JV travel together and it was clear that there was a certain energy on the bus on the way there. The Big Green made it clear that they had come ready to play in the first set of the game. Consistent serving, hitting, and passing allowed us on a fast-track to the first win. We had only 1 hitting error in the set, and had great performances by Camila Navarro ’20 hitting +0.500, Melissa Mitrovic ’19 hitting +0.333, and finally Georgia Quesnelle ’19 hitting +0.400 with 6 kills on 14 attempts with no errors. Quesnelle also had 2 aces for the big green during the first set. Deerfield won by a score of 25-11.
The second set followed the first in a similar manner, although Williston had some improvements all around. They came back stronger, and Deerfield rose to the challenge. Generating more of an offense off of our serves our back row stepped in and provided the Green and White with 20 digs in the second set. This allowed us to continue our strong offense and pull away to win the set 25-16.
The third set saw some different faces on the court for Deerfield. We were able to show our depth and continue to play Our Game with a different lineup. It was clear that our offense was a little tired, and as a team we hit 0.00 for the game, with 6 kills and 6 hitting errors. Williston put up a battle through to the end, and after coming back from a little deficit Deerfield was able to push through all the way to the end of the set and come out with an exciting 27-25 victory.
The team has started a tradition of awarding our team Bear (a stuffed bear with a Deerfield sweater) to the MVP of each game. Today the bear went to our junior captain Georgia Quesnelle, who hit led the team with 15 kills and 4 service aces. Georgia is also a great team player that knows how to keep everyone calm on the court.
The Deerfield Girls are excited to head to St. Paul’s on Saturday!
