On a beautiful Saturday afternoon on the Deerfield Academy campus, the girls varsity soccer team faced a strong Taft team on Fall Family Weekend. Despite the crowd support, DA was unable to push through for a victory. Twenty minutes into the game, Taft was able to break the 0-0 tie to take an early lead off a header goal from a well struck corner kick. After the goal, Deerfield continued to battle, staying strong on defense and created some good offensive chances. Heading into halftime, Taft continued to hold the lead 1-0.
Ten minutes into the second half, Taft was able to find the back on the net once again. Despite a tremendous initial save by junior goalkeeper Valerie Hetherington ’19, the rebound bounced to a Taft forward who was able to slam home the rebound to extend their led to 2-0.
Although down by two scores, DA continued to run hard and battle for every ball. Unfortunately, Taft was able to secure the win with another goal off some smooth midfielder and forward passing combinations that led to an easy finish inside the 6-yard box. This score would stand as the final as Taft took the 3-0 victory.
While Deerfield did not get the win, there were some very good performances on the day by DA players. Junior center back Mae Emerson ’19 had a great game defensively, stepping to the ball and tracking runners in the box. On the offensive side, junior midfielder Bailey Cheetham ’19, created many offensive chances and ran hard til the final whistle blew.
The girls varsity soccer team has some extra time to prepare for their next game as they do not have a game until Sunday, October 29th when they take on Phillips Andover Academy at home for a 1:00pm game.
