On a picturesque fall day in the Pioneer Valley, the Deerfield Girls Varsity Soccer team took the field against a tough NMH team. From the start, Deerfield came out strong and hungry for the win. The team generated multiple chances in the first ten minutes, peppering the goalkeeper and hitting the crossbar twice. However, despite Deerfield’s consistent pressure, NMH was able to grab the early 1-0 lead on a nicely timed through ball that was finished by a speedy NMH forward.
Rather than dwelling on the situation, Deerfield responded four minutes later with a goal of their own from junior forward Emma Reavis ’19. The goal, Reavis’ first of the season, came from a great defensive hustle play as she stole the ball from an NMH defender and launched a beautiful shot from the corner of the box that sailed over the goalkeepers head.
Nearing the end of the first half, Deerfield took the lead off a corner kick from senior forward Brenna Hoar ’18 who bent the ball from the sideline which trickled crossed the goal line. However, just minutes later, NMH was able to find the back of the net to even the score 2-2 heading into half time.
In an exciting second half, both teams had numerous chances to score. However, it took until the final three minutes of the game for the ultimate winning goal to come. The goal came from an NMH forward who volleyed the ball into the net off a corner kick to win the game 3-2.
Despite the score line, Deerfield did a lot of good things on day. We will look to bounce back from this loss on Saturday when we travel to Windsor, Connecticut to face a good Loomis team.
