After a couple of weeks’ hiatus from official competition (though featuring a couple of thrilling and tightly contested scrimmages with boys’ fourths soccer) the girls’ thirds team returned with a vengeance to defeat a well-matched JV squad from local Frontier Regional on Wednesday afternoon. A quick goal from Kikka Giudici ’20 started off the first half on a high note, as she took the ball from deep in Deerfield territory to blast a shot past the goalkeeper. Giudici scored again midway through the first half to give Deerfield another goal. Despite determined play from fellow sophomore strikers Whitney Vogt, who set up a number of huge crosses from the wing, and Griffin Dewey, the Big Green would not score again thanks to an aggressive and talented Frontier keeper. On the Deerfield side, ninth-grade keeper Sydney Bluestein was a star throughout the game, as she earned her first shutout of the season in the face of a consistent offensive assault by Frontier. At the midfield, Grace Knight ’20 brought a huge effort, chased down every ball that came her way, and covered space to ensure momentum remained on Deerfield’s side throughout the game. A standout defensive performance came from Taylor Coan ’21, and Maddie Clough ’20 shone as well, as both headed off breakaways on the wings. The team looks forward to an away contest with Loomis on Saturday afternoon and hopes to build on their competitive energy in practice for the rest of the week!
