Boys Jr. A Soccer played an active and energetic NMH team to a 0 – 0 tie. In the first half, Deerfield traded possession with NMH in quick back and forth spurts, neither team able to control the ball for long. A fast NMH striker followed several long balls to breakaways, but was turned away as sweeper Seth Blain ’20 used his body to gain possession and prevent the shot. A handball at the opposite end in the NMH box provided an opportunity for DA, and Michael Scharfenberger ’21 almost tapped in the rebound, but the ball sailed to the right. NMH continued to use the sun and the significant wind to their advantage, sending the ball deep into the Deerfield half, but the DA defense regained control each time. Before the first half ended, James Whiteley ’20 sent a long ball up the sideline to Scharfenberger, who passed it quickly along to a streaking Connor Guest ’20 for another shot on the NMH goal. The scene repeated itself just a few minutes later, as Whiteley again cleared it up to Johnnie Glinton ’19 on the outside, who took it through the defense for a final shot on goal before the half. After play resumed, the ball made its way again to the NMH net, this time with the sun and wind in our favor. Eric Wang ’21 sent a shot that was just barely off the tips of the keeper’s fingers from the center of the box. Physical play characterized the second half, with several free kicks for both sides leading to a continued back and forth game. The strikers on both the Deerfield and NMH squads had multiple scoring opportunities, including good tries from Merritt Wurts ’21 and several clean corners from Elliot Flagg ’20. However, none made it into the net, and DA walked away with its second consecutive 0 – 0 tie.
