Deerfield edged Loomis Chaffee 30-23 to win their third game in a row. Loomis came out of the gates with a trick play on their very first play that went 64 yards to the Deerfield 16 yard line. The defense was able to clamp down and hold Loomis to only a field goal. Deerfield finally got on the board at the end of the first quarter with a 26 yard touchdown pass from QB Jack Bill to WR Sam Dwinell. In the 2nd quarter, after a Deerfield punt was downed at the 2 yard line on a spectacular play by S Luke Terry, the defense swarmed Loomis and forced them into a safety on third down to make the score 9-3 in favor of Deerfield. Each team would score a touchdown before the end of the half to make the score 16-10 in favor of Deerfield at the break.
The second half saw each team score two touchdowns a piece. Loomis took the ball on the opening kick of the second half and scored on an 8 play drive to take the lead 17-16. Deerfield answered on the very next drive, with RB Keegan McHugh scoring from 3 yards out to cap off 7 play drive to make the score 23-16. After a defensive stop by Deerfield, RB Keegan McHugh took the first play of the 4th quarter for a 62 yard touchdown run to increase the Deerfield lead to 30-16. Loomis would not go away as they scored on a 4th and goal from the 9 yard line to get within a touchdown of the lead. But with 4:41 left in the game, Loomis would never see the ball again. The Deerfield offense was able to hold onto the ball the rest of the way, converting on a 4&2 run that sealed the victory for the visiting Big Green.
Deerfield finishes their year on the road with a 3-1 record. The next 3 games are at home starting with Phillips Exeter on October 21st at 2:30pm.
