Deerfield Hockey made the long trip to New Hampton on Friday night to take on one of the top teams in New England. Despite the long bus ride and exhausting week, we came out strong in the first period, out shooting the home team 10-5. New Hampton struck first, however, when a fortuitous bounce off of the end boards landed on an open stick in front of the net, but the Big Green did not let that swing the momentum. Mary Edmonds ’19 tied the score halfway through the period, finishing off a beautiful passing sequence from Meghan Halloran ’17 and Jenna Greenbaum ’17. In the second, Greenbaum and Halloran combined for a stifling penalty kill, and defenders Libby Wenners ’17, Meaghan O’Brien ’18, Deirdre Mullowney ’19, Ali Dougal ’18, Erin DeMarco ’19, and Ali Fujiyoshi ’19 did a fantastic job of shutting down rushes in the neutral zone. A breakdown in coverage in the third period allowed a talented New Hampton forward to snipe a shot top corner, but Deerfield’s power play tied the game when Fujiyoshi tipped home a Mullowney shot from the point. Edmonds, Mae Emerson ’19, Aurora Devereaux ’20, and Brenna Hoar ’18 all had good chances in close, including a few in overtime, but we ultimately could not come up with the winning goal. Jordan Manning ’19 was excellent in goal, including a key save on a breakaway late in the game. Though we are not unhappy with this tie, the Big Green was the better team on the night, and we will look to close out these close games moving forward. Still, the team demonstrated an incredible about of character and resilience, and should be proud of how hard they competed. We will finish out this challenging week with a home game against Taft on Saturday evening. Special shout out to manager Graham O’Brien ’19 and injured player Juliet Perry ’19, both of whom have made the long trips with the team this week, and have done whatever necessary to support their teammates despite not being out on the ice. Thank you to the many families who came to support us tonight, and especially to the Wenners family for the pizza, drinks, desserts and coveted cake pops after the game.
