Determined to maintain possession of the Hastings Cup, given annually to the winner of the Deerfield/Pomfret game, the Big Green took the ice on Wednesday evening with energy and excitement. We got on the board early, as a dump in by Mary Edmonds ’19 from center ice somehow eluded the Pomfret goalie. Meghan Halloran ’17 doubled our lead a few minutes later, firing home a rebound of an Edmonds shot, after nice work down low by Jenna Greenbaum ’17, who also earned an assist. Halloran and Edmonds would team up again on the penalty kill, executing a beautiful exchange at the blue line that gave Halloran a clear lane to goal that she took advantage of. Our forth goal of the period was scored by Erin DeMarco ’19, who snuck in from the point and made no mistake with a perfect pass from Christina Halloran ’20. Ali Fujiyoshi ’19 earned the second assist. Despite being up 4-0 after the first period, we knew that we had not played our best hockey, and looked to play with better energy moving forward. We dominated possession in the second frame, keeping Pomfret pinned in their zone shift and shift, but were only able to get one by the new Pomfret goalie. That goal came when Edmonds took a pass from DeMarco down low, slid the puck through a defender to Halloran, who faked the goaltender out to earn the hat trick. To their credit, Pomfret never stopped working hard, and passive play in the third period forced Jordan Manning ’19 to make some excellent saves, before finally yielding a goal on a Pomfret power play. We got two goals of our own in the period, one from Mae Emerson ’19 and the other from Fujiyoshi, with the younger Halloran picking up both assists. We’ll look to continue our positive momentum against Andover at home on Saturday night. Thank you to the Hallorans for the Panera sandwiches, bread, fruit, veggies and drinks after the game, as to Mrs. Dougal and Ms. Loftus as usual for their famous cookies.
