Deerfield Hockey traveled to Wallingford, CT today to take on rival Choate, and skated away with a well-deserved 2-1 win. The girls had talked all week about being mentally prepared to get off the bus and play a strong first period, and, perhaps aided by a viewing of “Miracle” on the bus ride, did just that. We outshot the home team 12-4 in the opening frame, but were only able to get one goal off of the stick of Meghan Halloran ’17, who converted a beautiful feed from Mary Edmonds ’19. Choate tied the game in the second, when a high puck bounced off several people before sneaking past Liv Mikesell ’20. This seemed to rattle us, but we regrouped in between periods and were determined to regain the momentum. Each line earned good scoring opportunities, but it was Jenna Greenbaum ’17 who scored the winning goal when she pounded home the rebound from an Erin DeMarco ’19 shot. Despite taking a penalty in the final minute, we were able to hold Choate off, with Mikesell making some key saves when it mattered most. There were several standout performances today, but most of all it was a great team win. We have two more big games this week, starting with New Hampton on Friday night. A big thank you to the Edmonds family for the pizza, fruit, drinks, and unbelievable chocolate covered pretzels after the game.
