Hockey, Girls: Junior Varsity ties Taft

Event Details

The girls JV Hockey team went to Taft to renew the annual rivalry of these two well-matched teams.  Taft got on the board quickly, but the Deerfield skaters rapidly adjusted to the large ice surface and tied the game up on a goal by Kathryn Grennon ’17 off a nice feed from Katie Morse ’17.  Deerfield pulled ahead in the second period on goals from Maggie Roche ’19, who finished off a rink-long rush with a nice wrist shot and Meredith Heaney ’19 who snapped in a loose puck after shots by her linemates Bailey Cheetham ’19 and Katie Whalen ’18.  Taft then bounced back with two goals of their own and the pace of the game was beginning to get hectic when Tierney Roche ’18 took a rising shot in the neck area and had to leave the game.  The Big Green was temporarily stunned to lose a defensive leader and Taft proceeded to net two more goals to take a 3-5 lead.  In the third period, Maggie Roche sparked the Deerfield comeback with a powerful attack up the left side and scored after circling the Taft net, making the score 4-5.  DA pulled the goalie with just over a minute remaining, shelling the Taft goal with multiple shots, and as time ticked away Katie Whalen put home a rebound of a shot by Cornelia Mackay ’18 to tie the game 5-5 with four seconds remaining on the clock.
