Girls JV Ice Hockey hosted perennial rival Loomis Chaffee School in the first game of our home-and-home series this year. The visiting team went on the attack right out of the gate as the Loomis defenders repeatedly skated the puck up ice, eventually scoring a goal. The senior line of Katie Morse, Kathryn Grennon and Margot Genereux responded with a goal of their own a few minutes later and the first period ended with the teams tied at one apiece. From that point on, Deerfield pressed with a forecheck that generated multiple scoring opportunities from the slot and from the blue line, while goalie Hannah Swinerton ’17 and the strong Big Green defense made sure Loomis did not score again. The line of Katie Whalen ’18, Bailey Cheetham ’19 and Meredith Heaney ’19 flew all over the offensive zone and scored twice in the second period to give Deerfield the lead 3-1 after two periods of play. The Deerfield attack wore down Loomis in the third period, scoring six times – including the first Deerfield Hockey goal for freshman Annabelle Gerber – to make the final score Deerfield 9, Loomis 1.
