Hockey, Boys: Junior Varsity defeats Salisbury

Event Details

With Chief Woz guiding the Green Machine through a nasty winter storm, the JV Hockey team headed to Salisbury to take on the Knights from the Salisbury School in their first contest back from break.

The Salisbury team battled from the start, and the first period ended with the fast-paced tilt knotted at 0-0.  In between periods Head Coach Lyons was troubled to learn that our power forward, Reid Shilling had broken a blade.  Equipment Manager Emerson was quick to find Reid some new steel, but Coach Lyons wondered if the cracked blade would really effect Reid’s skating.  Reid returned to action with a blade fashion from a steak knife that the rink operator at Salisbury was kind enough to attach to his skate.

In an even match through the second and third periods, which featured good scoring chances, the game ended in a 0-0 tie.  Both goalies – Andrew Peck for Deerfield- were exceptional. The coaches agreed to a 5-minute overtime period that started with the line of Punisa, Cam and Nicky looking as if they were skating in mashed potatoes.  Thankfully the team picked up the pace and with a strong, low shot by Eamon McNamara from the point, the Deerfield squad earned the win.

We’d like to thank the Chief for getting us to and from Salisbury safely and the Athletic Department for providing pizza to the team when our return was delayed by an hour.
