The girls varsity soccer team started off their 2016 season on Saturday, 9/17 with a back-and-forth physical battle at Milton Academy. In the first half, both teams created scoring opportunities. Deerfield’s backline along with goalkeeper, Erin DeMarco ’19 were sharp and stifled any Milton opportunities. Nicole DaCosta ’19 led the backline with her stellar 1v1 defending. Deerfield’s most dangerous opportunity in the first half came when Meghan Halloran ’17 beat her defender on the right flank and crossed a ball to teammate Brenna Hoar ’18 who was crashing the goal for the finish. Milton’s goalkeeper just beat Brenna to the ball to make the save. Milton opened the scoring at the end of the first half by finishing a crossed ball on the back post. The Deerfield team matched their first half effort in the second half, continuing to create chances in the attacking third and limiting Milton’s chances. Around the midway point in the second half, Milton was awarded a direct free-kick from 25 yards out which was bent over the wall into the upper ninety of the goal. Goalkeeper, Valerie Hetherington ’19 made a valiant attempt to make a save on the free kick. The collective team effort and energy was a great way to start the season!
