Soccer, Boys: Varsity defeats Salisbury

Event Details

Boys’ Varsity Soccer opened its season with a 1-0 victory at Salisbury.  The dry, hard, sloping pitch and cross-field wind contributed to less-than-ideal playing conditions.  Even so, DA began well and put together two halves of good soccer.  The back four and center-midfielders worked very hard to deny the opposition good scoring opportunities; and, on the few occasions when he was tested, senior goalkeeper Tim Gerber was well-positioned and sure-handed.  While DA had considerable success stretching Salisbury and playing down the wings, the breakthrough moment came from an attack down the center of the field: ten minutes before half-time, freshman Zach Davis pushed the ball through the Salisbury back line, thereby releasing senior George Fair, who won the ensuing foot-race.  From 25 yards out, George volleyed across the box and over the Salisbury keeper, sending the ball into the upper-right corner of the goal and his teammates and DA supporters into a state of jubilation.  George followed up with an almost equally impressive goal celebration!  Thereafter, every player on the field worked hard to maintain the momentum and preserve the victory.  All in all, it was a good team effort and a satisfying result for the beginning of the season.
