We lost a tough Saturday match to a well-coached Taft squad. Coach Frew’s teams always play good doubles, relentlessly attacking the net on all three courts, and in an unfortunate repeat of last year, our #3 team went down a quick 8-0 to start things off. Darren and Scott jumped out to a 6-1 lead, but loosened their grip just a bit, allowing Taft’s players to gather some steam and run off seven games in a row. Although that decided the doubles point, we let our #1s finish their match, and some beautiful serving by Carl put an 8-6 win on the board.
We found limited success in singles, facing an uphill battle on every court – with the notable exception of Carl, who blasted through Boyle (who played quite well) via an unyielding barrage of forehands. Scott, Darren, and Matthew all fought hard but could never get over the hump, and Gideon couldn’t recover from a slow start to the second. Alfi, playing in the shadows of the end court, provided a bright spot as he turned things around after quickly dropping the first and played a close supertiebreaker.
Thanks to the Grants for their support today. The boys will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday with a trip to Loomis.
